Safety & Security

Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School strives to ensure a quality educational experience for all individuals, free from the concerns of security and safety issues. Parents and students can be assured that KMC and the Catholic Diocese of Wichita are taking proactive steps to protect the safety of our students and staff on a daily basis.

Below is an outline of security measures utilized daily.

  • KMC Security Team: Along with teachers, designated members of the KMC Security Team monitor student and guest activity with special attention paid to hallways, classrooms, lunch rooms, parking lots, and Mass. The KMC Security Team partners with the City of Wichita Police Department and local security consultants to regularly review our protocols and strengthen areas of weakness.

  • Practice Drills: In accordance with the Kansas Department of Education, KMC conducts regular drills to practice with students and teachers on the procedures of what to do should there be an emergency, including tornado, fire, intruder, and even active shooter scenarios. Practice is done with student emotional and physical well-being in mind. The drills are not meant to scare, but to empower students and teachers on what to do in the case of an emergency.

  • Dress Code: While the dress code fulfills an educational purpose, it also fulfills a security role by quickly and clearly identifying individuals in the building who are not compliant.

  • ID Badges: All staff and students, and even registered visitors, are required to wear ID badges on a daily basis. For students and staff, these ID badges also allow access to our locked perimeter doors, which act as an electronic key system.

  • Office Lockdown: The main office has been upgraded to an instantly lockable command center in case of emergency. The office staff and administration use an electronic system to unlock the doors to the office for visitor and personnel when needed, as they lock automatically.

  • Electronic Entries: The main entrances to the building have all been upgraded to electronic locking systems, that students and staff unlock with their ID badges. These doors lock automatically behind each individual, requiring ID badge access (and a computer log of entries) by each new individual. A few specified doors are open before the school day begins, then all doors are locked throughout the school day. Visitors must buzz in for access at the main entrance only.

  • Security Cameras: All KMC premises, inside and outside of the school, have been outfitted with security cameras and are used to monitor the building and property.

  • School Messenger Quick Tip: Quick Tip is an option for all students and community members to alert school personnel of a perceived threat to safety in a quick and completely anonymous manner. Possible issues for which a Quick Tip could be utilized are Bullying/Cyber Bullying, Drugs, Problems at Home, Property Damage/Maintenance Issue or School Threat.
