Block Schedule

Block Schedule
Classes meet for 90 minutes on an A/B schedule. On the A schedule, blocks 1,2,3,4 meet. On the B schedule, classes 5,6,7,8 meet. One week the schedule will be A,B,A,B,A. The next week it is B,A,B,A,B.
C days also exist. The semester may begin with a C day schedule, for example. In the event that school is canceled for an unplanned event, like inclement weather, the following day will be a C day.
Classes meet 18 weeks per semester.
Grading Scale
Grade Scale and Grade Point Average
Kapaun Mt. Carmel employs a modified grading scale. Grading periods are defined in semesters. Grade point averages and class rank are computed on all subjects taken.
The grading scale is shown on the transcript. Letter grades are assigned to a student in accordance with the percentage of total possible points he or she has earned in a class. Letter grades are "A" through "F" and are awarded on the basis of a modified grade scale. Kapaun Mt. Carmel's grade scale is depicted below.
A weighted Grade Point Average (GPA) is a way for high schools to create a measure of academic achievement that takes into account the difficulty of a student's course load and not just his or her grades alone. On a weighted GPA scale, GPAs typically range from 0 to 5.0, with a 5.0 representing all As in the highest-level classes.
Each letter grade has associated with it a defined number of grade points, with classes designated as Honors having available a higher number of grade points than those that are available in non-Honors classes, and AP classes having available a higher number of grade points than those available in Honors classes. The grade point average is calculated as the quotient of Total grade points/Total potential points.
The grade scale is as follows:
Percentage | Grade | Non-Honors | Honors | AP with AP Test* |
92 - 100 | A | 4.0 | 4.5 | 5.0 |
90 - 91 | B+ | 3.5 | 4.0 | 4.5 |
83 - 89 | B | 3.0 | 3.5 | 4.0 |
81 - 82 | C+ | 2.5 | 2.75 | 2.75 |
74 - 80 | C | 2.0 | 2.5 | 2.5 |
65 - 73 | D | 1.0 | 1.0 | 1.0 |
0 - 64 | F | 0.0 | 0.0 | 0.0 |
Because even an "A" in a non-Honors class could lower a student's overall GPA, students who are attempting to be Valedictorian or Salutatorian or to rank in the top 10% of the class by their senior year should take the most rigorous curriculum possible and earn the highest grades possible.
*AP Calculus I and AP Calculus II are exceptions to the AP test requirement for the additional .5 weight. A student who takes either or both of these classes will receive the additional .5 weight if the student maintains a grade of "B" or better. As a consequence of this exception, no distinction will be made on the student's transcript for taking or not taking the AP exam in these classes.
Final Exams
In General:
Comprehensive or semester exams/projects at the end of first and second semesters will be given according to schedules posted before exam dates. No exams will be given prior to exam dates unless the student receives permission from the administration. Only seniors with an “A” grade and teacher permission may be exempted from semester exams. Students must have all educational costs, fines, etc. paid before they can take exams. Finals will not count for more than 10% of a grade. Students requesting special testing accommodations must have a current Individualized Learning Plan on file with the counseling department.
