Journalism/Student Media
Student Media at Kapaun Mt. Carmel is a nationally renown student-led program under the direction of a faculty adviser. There are three main avenues of participation within the department: photography, newsmagazine/website and yearbook. The Paladin newsmagazine and Crusader Yearbook are members of the Kansas Scholastic Press Association, Columbia Scholastic Press Association and the National Scholastic Press Association, and participate in contests, conferences and critiques within those organizations.
Recent awards include a 2017 NSPA Pacemaker for the Paladin, a 2017 CSPA Silver Crown for the Crusader Yearbook, a 2019 KSPA state championship, a 2019 CSPA Crown Award Finalist for the yearbook, a 2021 CSPA Crown Award Finalist for the Paladin, a 2021 NSPA Pacemaker Finalist for the Paladin and 2022 KSPA All-Kansas Critiques for the Paladin and the Crusader Yearbook, in addition to multiple Kansas Association of Broadcasters individual state championships, KSPA monthly contest award winners and CSPA Gold Circle Awards.
Below are descriptions of each, but please refer to the Program of Studies for more information.

Photography
Photography I is a year-long course designed for beginning photographers. Within the course, students will learn photography history, camera functions, photography techniques, imaging software, and other beginning skills. Additionally, students will experiment with artistic and portrait photography. Students are also assigned to shoot events for KMC publications. After completion of Photography I, students can continue with their study in Publications Photography for either the Crusade staff or Yearbook staff. All photos taken by student photographers are eligible for publication.
Crusade Staff: Paladin newsmagazine, KMCCrusade website & Youtube page:
Journalism II is a student-led course that produces videos, the Paladin newsmagazine, kmccrusade.com student media website and the KMC Journalism Youtube page. In this course, students will concentrate on storytelling in whichever format deemed necessary for that story, whether it be a newsmagazine article, website article, photography package or video. Students will have creative license in each of the areas, but will be required to perform all skills of the modern journalist. The staff has also been live streaming several activities on its Youtube page.
The Crusade staff also produces content on social media. Follow them on Instagram (@kmccrusade) and Twitter (@kmccrusade). Check out their website HERE and their Youtube page HERE.
The Paladin is published six times a year and a parent subscription can be ordered at fall registration. Questions? Contact Elaine Robinson via email.
Crusader Yearbook
Yearbook is a student-led course offered for the production of the yearbook. Students will utilize editing, writing and designing skills through practical application in producing the yearbook. Additionally, students are expected to write articles, complete yearbook pages, and assist with the production of the yearbook until completion.
The yearbook is a fall-delivery book, with students completing the publication in early June. Students receive their copies of the book in mid-August at a student-wide distribution event. Graduated seniors can pick their yearbooks up in the main office during normal business hours beginning in August.

Theatre
The theatre department offers several classes for students interested in studying the dramatic arts, including Intro to Theatre, Acting I and II and Stagecrafts. Intro to Theatre provides an overview of theater, including the art of comedy and drama, plays versus musicals, a survey of the history of theater and learning what goes on backstage, both creatively and technically. Acting I and II focus on acting skills, text analysis, audition techniques and scene-work requiring emotions and analysis skill.
In Stagecrafts, students are presented an overview of the most common practices, materials, and tools involved in the creation of scenery, sets, and prop construction for theatrical productions. Students work with tools to build, paint, and create sets for the shows put on by KMC Theater. For more information on courses available, refer to the Program of Studies or the Pathways page.
Within the drama department, students also have the option to participate in any of the three productions put on throughout the year, in roles of technical crew, actors, backstage, etc. Students work with drama teacher Mr. Gabriel Heffernan, among other teacher consultants, to plan, create, practice and produce full productions.
Additionally, the Theatre Department puts on four productions during the year in which students may involve themselves: the fall production (a play or musical), a winter play and a spring musical. The Golden Masque Awards, a variety show, is also held in May. Students may gain access to KMC's Thespian Troupe should they meet the participation requirement.
